PUBLIC INFORMATION DURING EMERGENCIES

This custom two-day workshop is intended to meet the needs of elected officials, municipal managers, first responders and experts who occasionally have to give interviews to the media during an Emergency.

The workshop is designed to provide participants with a basic understanding of the media and to increase their comfort level during interviews, through a combination of formal presentation and practical exercises.

The workshop covers the following areas:

• Basic understanding of Emergency
Communications Planning
• Overview of the media and their needs
• Negotiating with reporters
• Preparing for interviews
• Structuring information
• Delivering “sound bites”
• The art of “bridging”
• Taking advantage of “trap” questions
• Conducting media “scrums”
• Organizing, conducting and moderating
news conferences
• Working proactively with the media

A realistic Emergency situation is used as the scenario for the different exercises.

A manual summarizing the workshop content is provided to each participant.

The workshop is limited to sixteen (16) participants with two communications professionals delivering the content and conducting the on camera exercises and reviews.

POSITIVE MEDIA RELATIONS FOR COMMUNICATIONS PRACTITIONERS

This two-day workshop is intended to meet the needs of communications practitioners who deal regularly with reporters and have responsibilities in preparing communications products such as communications plans, media advisories and news releases and occasionally have to give interviews to the media. The workshop is designed to provide participants with a basic knowledge of the media and to increase their comfort level during interviews, through a combination of formal presentation and practical exercises. The workshops are available in English and French.

Practice constitutes the key element of the workshop. Each participant is interviewed four times on camera over issues within his/her areas of responsibility. The interviews are then reviewed with comments by the instructor identifying strengths, weaknesses and ways to improve performance.

The workshop covers familiarizing participants to the needs of the media, developing and articulating powerful messages, identifying and using “trap” questions and nurturing a professional relationship with journalists. This portion of the workshop is presented using computer-animated slides and relevant audio-visual material.

A manual summarizing the workshop content and featuring checklists and templates is provided to each participant.

Class size

In order to provide optimal personalized coaching, each workshop is limited to six participants. For larger groups, two instructors lead the workshops.

POWERFUL PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLIC SPEAKING

This hands-on workshop is intended for people with little or no public speaking experience who occasionally have to make public presentations and/or speeches.

It is designed to provide participants with a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of structuring presentations and to increase their comfort level during delivery through a combination of formal presentation and practical exercises.

Participants in the workshop will learn how to:

• Define their presentation’s objectives
• Design a memorable close
• Create an interesting opening
• Structure the content
• Add spice to their presentation
• Design powerful visual aids
• Tailor their presentation to their audience
• Create “cheat sheets”
• Maximize the power of body language
• Handling the “butterflies”

Participants have an opportunity to prepare and deliver two short presentations on a topic relevant to their responsibilities. The videotaped presentations are then reviewed with critiques and tips for improvement.

Participants will also receive a practical document outlining the main points covered during the workshop.

The workshops are limited to twelve (12) participants with two communications professionals delivering the content and conducting the presentation reviews.
